DIVINO AFFLANTE SPIRITU

(INSPIRED BY THE HOLY SPIRIT)

Historically, Catholic translations of the Bible utilized the original Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek texts to determine the exact meaning of the Latin text. Advances in archeology and historical research have further defined how we analyze, understand, and explain the Bible. On September 30, 1943, Pope Pius XII inaugurated the modern period of Roman Catholic Bible studies by permitting the limited use of modern methods of biblical criticism. Pope Pius XII stressed the importance of the diligent study of these original languages and other cognate languages to arrive at a more profound and fuller understanding of the meaning behind the sacred texts. Since then, Catholic translations of the Bible have been based directly on the texts found in manuscripts in the original languages.

NABRE TRANSLATION

The NABRE is a formal equivalent translation of Sacred Scripture, sponsored by the Confraternity of Christian Doctrine, using the most trustworthy manuscripts available to provide a biblical translation that is more literal and accurate than previous translations available.

The New American Bible, Revised Edition (NABRE) is a culmination of 20 years of work by a collective of nearly 100 scholars, theologians, bishops, revisers, and editors. Thirteen revisors and five editors began translation works on the New Testament in 1978 and completed the revisions in 1986. Forty revisers and a board of eight editors began working through the Old Testament in 1994 and completed the revised translations in 2001. The 1991 revision of the Psalter, the work of thirty revisers and six editors, was further modified by seven revisers and two editors between 2009 and 2010. The NABRE includes a newly revised translation of the entire Old Testament (including the Book of Psalms) and the 1986 edition of the New Testament.

Benefits of the NABRE Translation

+ 1. Reader-Friendly

The NABRE Bible translation is easy to read and understand. Modern scholastic advances in biblical study and adaption to changes in linguistics render a more accurate translation in contemporary English.

+ 2. Literal & Accurate Translation

The NABRE uses the best manuscript translating traditions to translate more literally and accurately than previous translations available. The NABRE is the first Catholic translation directly from the original biblical languages rather than from the Latin Vulgate.

+ 3. Historical Accuracy

Utilizes recently discovered ancient manuscripts like the Dead Sea Scrolls to provide better historical textual tradition contained in the various introductions and footnotes.

+ 4. Bible Study

In addition to the accurate translations of the original language texts, the NABRE provides introductions, outlines for every book of the Bible, and over 8,000 study notes prepared by the Catholic Biblical Scholarship Team.

+ 5. Catholic Approved

The NABRE is an approved translation by The Confraternity of Christian Doctrine for bible study and personal prayer devotion.

KINDRED Bibles are an immersive presentation of the NABRE biblical books designed with the contemplative prayer principles of Lectio & Visio Divina. We invite you to experience the Word renewed.
